After Statik Selektah and Termanology successfully knocked out The Evening News EP in 24 hours live via Ustream, the next challenge was to see if Statik and Freeway could do the same. Freeway had already made magic using one producer exclusively for his last LP, The Stimulus Package, with Jake One. Could Statik do the same?

The sound here is different than what was found on The Evening News, as Freeway seems to have a taste less for mellow, smoked out beats, instead more for hard hitting drums and aggressive production. This is evident from the start, with the Asian-flavored track “Back At It”, as Free breaks down his “early” slang, or “The Flow”, which bangs with snapping drums and moody Buckwild-esque vibes. The M.O.P. driven “From The Street” finds him next to Lil Fame and Term, over aggro production not so different from that found on Warriorz.

But Free sounds just as cool when he’s mellowed out, if not cooler. “I’m In The Hood”, propelled by a Bun B sample finds Free sharing mic duties with Reek Da Villain over blazed production, while the posse cut “And It Don’t Quit” (feat. Tek of Smif N Wessun and Jakk Frost) takes a more light-hearted fare.

Arguably, Statik Selektah and Freeway’s Statik Free EP – the duo’s first project together – is not as strong as Stat and Term’s Evening News EP. Granted, the 1982 duo have been working together for years, so their chemistry is more natural. But for something knocked out in a 24 hour period, this still stands stronger than what you’ll hear from most rappers’ albums, some of who record for years and still can’t release a solid LP.
