R.A. the Rugged Man may be getting overwhelming prasise for his critically-acclaimed new album Legends Never Die, but that doesn’t mean he’s done murdering guest appearances. Most recently, R.A. linked up with Funk Volume emcee Jarren Benton for “Smells Like” off Benton’s new album My Grandma’s Basement.

While some might see it as an odd pairing, R.A. is quick to give props to FV. “I think because Funk Volume is finding success on its own a lot of people automatically are throwing hate at their artists,” he explains. “But they’ve some credible MC’s. Jarren got lyrics and flows, Dizzy Wright is way more intellectual lyrically than some give him credit for, and me and Hopsin did some classical Mozart, Beethovan type shit on my album on the joint ‘Underground Hitz’. I fuck with these Funk Volume cats and I’m glad our musical worlds collided.”

As for the track itself, R.A. was inspired to get extra rugged. “I think a joint like this gave me the opportunity to go really fucking ignorant,” he says. “Going back to my 1992, Crustified Dibbs days and really getting disturbingly visual and grotesque with the rhymes. Jarren’s ignorant rhyme style reminds me of those days and brings that out of me. That’s why I think the joint came out so ill.” My Grandma’s Basement is now available.
