Shout out to the HipHopSite massive. Over the last couple weeks, I’ve been working very closely with my good friend and colleague, Jonathan “Shecky Green” Shecter, on a new project called Cuepoint for Medium.Com. You may best know Shec as an original founder of The Source magazine, who opted out when he disagreed with the direction the publication was taking. You might also know Shec from his time running indie imprint, Game Records, which brought us a classic song called “Boom” by Royce Da 5’9 and DJ Premier, among other favorites. And some of you of course know Shecky from his time at Wynn Las Vegas, where he was Director of Original Programming on the Surrender / Encore Beach Club side of things, while I was working across the hall as music director and resident DJ at XS/Tryst.
For those that don’t know, Medium is a place for “Everyone’s Stories and Ideas”, and is a new platform dedicated to long-form writing. Twitter O.G. Ev Williams is at the helm, in a move that almost is the antithesis of the 140 character, short-form expression that he helped create. There are many “collections” on Medium, such as Matter – which I like to refer to as “articles about things that matter,” and Re:Form, “a field guide to the designed world.” Shec and I have teamed to create Medium’s music collection, Cuepoint, where we will deliver in-depth coverage of the music industry as a whole, with our many years in the music and nightlife industries helping lead the way.
There are lots of surprises in store (tomorrow is going to be a doozy), but here is what we have launched with today:
Encountering Miles: An incredible first hand account from longtime Philly rock journalist Tom Moon, who recalls meeting with Miles Davis in 1986, for an interview that didn’t quite go as planned.
Kanye West, Chris Brown, deadmau5: When Great Music Is Made By Despicable People: Writer Paul Cantor explores our fascination with assholes, and if that has any bearing on how we perceive them as artists.
Mark Ronson On Duran Duran: I spoke with the Grammy winning producer about working with Duran Duran. He also reveals details about his next album and speaks on working with Action Bronson, Chance The Rapper, and Vic Mensa.
Duran Duran & David Lynch Combine Talents For Unstaged: My look at Duran Duran’s new David Lynch directed concert film, in theaters tonight.
Robert Christgau: Expert Witness – The Story Till Now: Introduction to the legendary music journalist who has logged 14,000 album reviews, dating back to 1969. We’re happy to have him on the team.
We’re All DJ’s Now: Introduction By Jonathan Shecter: Shec introduces Cuepoint to the world, much better than I can.
There is lots more content coming, as we have some really amazing things in the works. Medium and Cuepoint have allowed me to write longer, more in-depth pieces than what is served up each day at HipHopSite, as we frantically keep up with the daily new music cycle. Set some time aside and check us out. http://www.medium.com/cuepoint
