Please Don’t Pretend Piracy Hasn’t Killed This Industry.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately. I’m not going to lie, I (allegedly) pirate shit all the time, and so do you. I kind of have my own set of rules concerning the practice though, just like you. For instance, I might (allegedly) download a movie illegally, but only in the case of something I’m not sure I want to see on the big screen. However if I love the movie, I will pay the exorbitant price of $30 to own in high definition on a Blu-Ray disc. And guiltily, I will probably upgrade my Blu-Ray disc when the Special Double Dip Edition comes out. The same goes for any album I love; I’ll definitely spring for the deluxe vinyl edition or oh-you-fancy-huh CD box set. [cont.]

Hate Me Later

With all of the controversy surrounding our review of Thank Me Later, it’s sparked a pretty heated debate on the site as to why hip-hop fans love or hate Drake. While everyone has their own opinion on the subject, reader Kevin Criss wrote in with an interesting perspective that really hasn’t been touched upon. Not to say that what Kevin is saying in the passage below is the exact reason for how people perceive Drake, but his opinion was interesting enough to repost here on the site. With that, we pass the mic to Kevin. Read on….. – DJ Pizzo [cont.]

Turn Your Swag Off.

Okay. The “swag” movement needs to die. Now. This terrible term has been used in hip-hop for years now and at this point needs to be straight murked. Frankly, M.I.A. needs to take the blame for this. [cont.]

R.I.P. My Aftermath Promotional T-Shirt (NSFW) (*sticky*)

It was the summer of 1996. Hip-Hop was a mess. We were slowly losing the sound of classic hip-hop music at this time. Stakes were high. The east coast / west coast feud had reached the boiling point, with Death Row Records and Bad Boy Entertainment at the center of it. Biggie and Tupac were still alive, both with tempers flaring. Dr. Dre had chosen to disassociate himself with the negativity surrounding Death Row by leaving the label – and leaving his masters with it. Dre shocked us all in that Source Magazine interview, where he revealed that he started a new label called Aftermath Entertainment, and would be working with artists like KRS-One and Nas. At the height of the controversy, an artist like Dre, who pretty much built his career around negative images of gangsta rap, came out and suggested he would begin working with “conscious” rappers. It was a shock to the system. Yes, the greatest producer of all time would team with the greatest rappers of all time in the construction of his new label. [cont.]

Where Are The Best Places To Buy Nas, Reflection Eternal, Janelle Monae, Guilty Simpson, & Roc Marciano

We used to see this happen every year, back when we ran indie rap retail – a bunch of labels all pick the same day for a bunch of quality releases, and none of them care to change it, forcing the consumer to start making choices, rather than multiple purchases. Today is a packed street date with new releases from Nas & Damian Marley, Reflection Eternal, Janelle Monae, Guilty Simpson, Roc Marciano, and Necro all hitting with new albums. Here we’re going to break down the various special offers and extended editions that are out there, and where you can pick them up.

Autographed Atmosphere “Sad Clown Bad Dub 3″ Contest

UPDATE: We have picked a winner. Candidates were selected at random, then each transported to a magical island, where each was assigned a number, and then put through a series of life threatening tests, time travel, alternate realities, and the limited use of swear words, including only “damn”, “son of a bitch”, and “sodding”. Kusi Peralta is the winner. Congratulations. More contests to help clean out the HipHopSite warehouse are coming soon, stay tuned….

How We Do.

(Above: Pharrell & HHS Staff @ HipHopSite retail store in 2006.)
As HHS re-enters the scene, we’re keeping a close watch on what’s going on in this industry, and the new breed of rap websites. All due respect to those who have been doing it the last few years, holding it down while we closed up shop, tried to battle Itunes, and ultimately slid back into the content groove that we’ve been doing since day one. Any “beefs” that have been manifested here in the last day or so are with one individual, not with anyone else in the scene. Nah Right, Rap Radar, DJ Booth, DX, Team Supreme, I’m Flashy, etc, you guys look great. Meka, your….[cont.]

The Fate Of Guru’s Masters And The Last Gang Starr Album. (*sticky*)

One thing surrounding the controversial, untimely, and tragic death of Guru is the fate of his yet-to-be released recordings. We all know that Guru has been recording exclusively on 7*Grand Recordings over the last few years with Solar. What this means, sadly, is that the recordings under the label that remain unfinished or in the vaults are probably owned partly by Solar and partly by the estate of Guru, whomever that includes.
